Pune 01 May 2017 (PCP NEWS): Jail is not punishment, but a step towards reforming thoughts and ideas, finding positive meanings of life said the Additional Director General of Jails Dr B K Upadhyay, here this afternoon.
Today Yeravda Jail Authorities took one step towards reforming around 60 prisoners, with their skill in Leather products, and with hand in hand with Tergus Company, who had installed the require Infrastructure to manufacture various Leather products, in this Central Prison. On this occasion, ADG Dr Upadhyay, while addressing the peoples said that, It is an important day for us as Yerwada Central Prison has got the unique distinction of becoming the first jail in Maharashtra to get first of its kind modern Leather Products unit at its premises. Reformation and Rehabilitation of prisoners has always been our core focus area and we undertake various activities to develop skill sets of the inmates, today’s initiative is a mile stone for us towards reforms, since jail is not a punishment to the prisoners, but it is a step towards reforming thoughts and ideas presented by them, we can also find positive meanings of life by giving and using their skill, which can help them after their release.
Dr Upadhyay also added that, At present 60 prisoners will be engaged for manufacturing various Leather Products, which can be extended up to 300, as per the volume of sales, our motive is to give work to these prisoners who can also earn some money, and get engaged through out the day during their punishment tenure, this experince will also help them in future when they are free. Every prisoner start here from “0”, and each day spend here is remembered through out his life, but our rehabilitation work will get explored.
Dr Upadhyay also mentioned that, the regular Police duty and the Jail duty is much different, outside jail we try to curb crime, but here we have to face the criminals, these criminals here, after conviction, need proper rehabilitation, for this we had started various projects which gives a strong message during their punishment tenure, besides this it is also appreciated by these prisoners, many skill prisoners lie calm and quiet in prisons, for this we need to utilize their experience, which helps us to generate revenue, it is also a opportunity to explore their skill. The ADG also said that it is also necessary to allow us, to give some work to those who are under trial, around 70 percent prisoners are under trial and they are not allowed to do any work, since all the prisons are full of these Under Trials, if they are allowed, we can have a proper platform to explore their experience and the products manufacture here will be manufacture on mass, at present the products manufacture here are having limited customers, said the ADG.
Tergus group headed by a young person Devej Mehata, in their continuous social up-liftment programs has now started a new facility at Yerwada Jail, Pune to manufacture various Leather Products, within the premises of Jail Authority for its esteemed Customer, This Public – Private Partnership project is a collaborative project between Tergus and Yerwada Central Prison Authority.The function was graced by K L Prasad (Retd) IPS, Spl I G Chagan Wakde, DIG prison Swati Sathe, Jail Superintendent U T Pawar and all the officers of Yearavda Prison, along with the Tergus Managing Committee.
